Adobe Releases New 3D PDF Software Says Apple Isn’t In The Big Picture

With the release of Adobe Acrobat 3D, Adobe leverages the power and spread of its near ubiquitous PDF software into a field that sorely needs it. I do a lot of work in prepress in a book publishing environment. Over the years, I have received quite a bit of art from engineers, architects, and the like that were in all sorts of CAD type software. It is always difficult for me to examine and work with this type of art. I have tried many software solutions to make it easier, but every time I think I have the answer I get a new batch saved in some other funky way. I love receiving files in PDF format where I can bend them to my will with the power of Pitstop (my favorite PDF managing software) that brings all Acrobat problems to their knees.

If 3D artists who use CAD software start using Acrobat 3D I think it will be a boon to the industry. It will speed up the whole editing and review process and eliminate the need for people in the editing chain to use complicated and expensive software. These people wil only need to have Acrobat Reader 7.

So, why leave Apple out of the game. Quite simply, from my experience most CAD desgners use PCs. Nothing is stopping Mac users from reviewing the documents, they just can’t create them.

Since I am primarily a Mac user, my gut reaction when I saw this news was defensiveness and anger at Adobe. My Mac is ignored far too often by the big software companies. However, in this case it just didn’t take a whole lot of thinking from me to change my mind and say ‘no big deal’. I am just please as punch to be able to see the darn art.
